This exciting course is for students who are interested in exploring a career in the medical field. Students will learn about the various medical careers through field trips, guest speakers and acquiring basic knowledge of medical terms and anatomy and physiology.

Included in this Medical Careers course is an integrated math curriculum. Graduation-Required Assessments for Diploma (GRAD) portion of the MCA test.
Nursing Assistant -
Spring Semester ONLY

10:00 a.m.
12:10 p.m. Math Enhanced Course**
This advanced course prepares students for entry-level patient care jobs. Upon successful completion, students will receive American Heart Association CPR and First Aid cards and be eligible to take the state Nursing Assistant Registry exam. A mantoux test and a clean background check are required. The course meets Federal and Minnesota Department of Health requirements.

(Prerequisite: Passed the HTC Accuplacer test within the areas of reading comprehension and listening skills.)
*Note: A uniform fee of approximately $30 will be required. A uniform is mandatory for the clinical experience.

Food Science Technology - NEW Spring Semester 2010
EPC - 12:10 p.m.
In this introductory course students will learn about the industry that develops and improves food products that is healthy, safe and appealing. This course will cover aspects of the food processing industry which relies on the work of food scientists to ensure safe, nutritious, good-tasting products.

Culinary Arts - BPC and EPC

EPC - 12:10 Math Enhanced Course**
This course is intended to introduce students to a variety of careers in the food service industry. Students will experience a number of career areas through both technical and hands-on skills.
Areas of Study:
- Safety and sanitation
- Bakery production
- Pantry production
- Preparation of stocks, sauces, and soups
- Appetizers, canapes, hors d'oeuvres
*Note: A uniform fee of approximately
$30.00 will be required.

In this Culinary Arts section, students use mathematics applied in a technical context. Particular attention will be paid to the areas tested on the Graduation-Required Assessments for Diploma (GRAD) portion of the MCA test.
Cooking for Independent Living
BPC and EPC - 8:00 a.m.
(No Hennepin Technical College articulated credit is available for this course.)
This
course introduces the student to basic food preparation skills for use in the
home setting as well as on the job. The student will learn to prepare balanced
meals with emphasis on nutrition and economy. This course is designed for
students who are developing transition skills.

Food Service Assistant - Fall or Spring Semester
BPC - 10:00 a.m.

(No Hennepin Technical College articulated credit is available for this course.)
Students will acquire a basic knowledge of the skills required to perform a variety of tasks in a particular area of food service through hands-on learning. Skill development will meet industry standards at the entry level.
Areas of Study:
- Food sanitation and safety
- Following recipe procedures
- Weighing and measuring
- Following verbal and written directions
- Preparation and presentation of foods
*Note: A lab fee of approximately $5 for a chef's hat will be required.
Law Enforcement - NEW Fall Semester 2009
EPC - 12:10 p.m.
This program is designed for students interested in law enforcement careers such as police officer, crime scene investigator, probation officer, etc. This program makes it possible for you to learn through very practical hands-on training methods. You will learn such things as: patrol and firefighting procedures and tactics, traffic stop techniques, fingerprinting and booking and squad car familiarization.
